
The anti-government protest in front of the Presidential Secretariat has been broken up by the army a little while ago.
Following the economic crisis in the country, the protest was carried out against the government. They continued their struggle in front of the President's Secretariat under the name Gottagama.
Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned from the presidency on the 14th when the protest was intensifying. Today, Ranil Wickramasinghe was sworn in as the 8th executive president of the country.
However, President Ranil Wickremesinghe had said yesterday that forcefully occupying the Presidential Palace and the Prime Minister's office is illegal.
Also, the President had announced that strict legal action would be taken against those involved in such illegal activities.
Accordingly, steps have been taken to provide Colombo Viharamakadevi Park for the protestors to conduct their 'Go-Home-Ranil' protest without hindrance.
It was reported that the President made this announcement during the party leaders' meeting held today in the Parliament building. According to this, those who were protesting in front of the alarm hall left the place.
However, those who were protesting in front of the President's Secretariat continued their protest.
In this situation, armed forces suddenly arrived at the pre-deployed site in the Presidential Secretariat complex at midnight today and evacuated everyone from the place. Also, the tents there have been removed.
It is also reported that the people present at the protest site were attacked and journalists were also attacked.
Ranil Wickramasinghe, who was sworn in as the President today, went to the Defense Headquarters as his first visit. There he had a discussion with the Defense Secretary, Army Commanders and other dignitaries.
It is in this background that now there are reports that the protesters have been evicted.
