According to a nationwide survey, agricultural experts have warned that food shortages are likely to rise next year due to rising food prices.
They point out that the price of a kilo of rice could rise to 200 rupees by March if there is no immediate solution to the current situation.
Across the island, there is a severe shortage of essential commodities, including milk powder, gas and kerosene.
In addition to the shortage of food items, their prices have also increased.
The only solution is to expand production in the country to control rising commodity prices and the cost of living. Trade Minister Bandula Gunawardena yesterday called on farmers to start a large-scale planting campaign in January.
