It has been reported that passenger and cargo planes are facing a major problem due to the current dollar crisis in Sri Lanka.
At present, flights arriving at Sri Lankan airports are refueled in dollars only. Airlines also have to pay large sums of money to their local representatives. Accordingly, foreign airlines are considering limiting the number of flights to Sri Lanka and reducing the number of flights.
The crisis has been going on for five months. Despite several rounds of talks with the authorities to reach a solution, no agreement has been reached.
As well as the outstanding amount in dollars as a percentage of the amount payable to the companies involved in the sale of air tickets and cargo.
It is hoped that this situation will have a major impact on Sri Lanka's future tourism development activities.
The government has invested heavily in promoting tourism in the country. However, traders in the tourism industry say that the money invested will be wasted if airlines are banned from flying to Sri Lanka.
Foreign airlines, which used to book 12 flights a week to Sri Lanka, have now halved that number.
Meanwhile, some airlines have stopped sending flights to Sri Lanka.
