Changing Political Arena - Victory For The Rajapaksas?

Political observers point out that the Rajapaksas are gaining indirect ground in the current context of Sri Lanka.

People are taking to the streets to demand the resignation of President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa in the wake of the country's economic crisis.

With nearly a month of popular struggle, the Rajapaksa regime continues. However they have not yet taken any action to leave the regime.

Political observers have been releasing a number of reports on the current situation. Letting people take to the streets and fight without imposing obstacles on their protests. It is the great hope of the Rajapaksa brothers that people who are bored by this will stop protesting and go home on their own.

Meanwhile, the prime minister is stepping down to prevent the people from escalating into an aggression, and the caretaker government is in the process of dragging its feet by staging a general election soon.

On the other hand, many who leave the government and act independently are staunch believers of the Rajapaksas. They now have a massive responsibility to protect them. Due to this, it is being reported among the people that the Mahinda-Kota division has split into two.

It is thus being passed on as annoying information to people who are angry at the government. However the reality is not so. The politicians intended to oust only Basil Rajapaksa, the ruling party. However, their allegiance to Mahinda and Gotabhaya is growing day by day.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa still says he has a majority in parliament in such a situation.

Opposition parties have stated they will not run in the by-elections. The reason for this is the distrust of Maithri, Weerawansa and Kamanpila, who are acting independently of the government. Insiders say a smooth deal has been struck with the Mahinda faction, despite pretending they have left the government.

Also, it is customary for the Sri Lankan rulers to run the government in obedience to the orders of the Maha Sangam. At present, however, the Rajapaksas do not seem to have heeded the repeated demands of the Maha Sangha for the immediate resignation of the Prime Minister.

In such a situation they are ensuring the existence of their regime despite all the pressures.

With prices rising day by day in the country, the struggle of the people has waned and they have to look for money for food next time. Due to this the intensity of the uprisings is currently declining.

It has been in a state of complete paralysis for a few weeks now. In such a situation, it is reported that the Rajapaksas, as they thought, had succeeded in weakening the people and escaping danger.
