Growing protests in Sri Lanka -What's the reason?-Former President

Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) leader and former head of state Maithripala Sirisena said the protests were taking place in the country because the people's representatives were not with the people.

He said this while addressing a press conference after a meeting of the Galle district election organisers at the Industrial Training Institute Auditorium in Pategama.

"Today there is a wave of protests among teachers, farmers and other parties across the country. This is due to the representatives of the people.

They don't go to the people. They do not identify and talk about people's problems. They are criticising every party.

If the price of goods in the country goes up further, there will be a bad situation. The government should take steps to check the rise in the prices of goods.

We proposed to the government to reduce the price of goods but did not get a positive response.

We are developing the future of our party at the district level and no party can go alone in this country and form a separate government."he said
