Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has said that Colombo University students have upheld their democratic rights by using inappropriate words without guns and bombs.
He also praised the students for their freedom and for not compromising the freedom of others.
When the graduation ceremony of the University of Colombo, chaired by Murutthettu Ananda Thero, took place recently, some students refused to accept the degree from the hands of the Thero.
In this context, he said the above.
He further commented,
He said the manner in which the students of Colombo University behaved at the graduation ceremony was very polite and the students expressed their opposition in a very democratic manner.
That day marked the victory of democracy in Sri Lanka. He also praised the students for exercising their democratic rights in a proper manner.
When the government or the head of state makes decisions against the will of the people, the people have the right to question it. In that sense, students have brought democracy to the pinnacle in Sri Lanka.
They expressed their opposition quietly and strongly. This is what we call democracy. He added that he would honor those students as former presidents of the country.
