Member of Parliament Rishad Bathiudeen has called for a change in the worst anti-terrorism law to arrest innocent youth and make it a humane law.
He was speaking to the media after attending an event in Vavuniya today (18).
Continuing to comment,
We do not know if this government is traveling with a policy. They said one thing before the election and after that everything is changing.
Today farmers without agricultural produce are greatly affected. They said we will give it for free. But today it is not available even for 20 thousand rupees.
The cabinet has decided to pay for the gum from China. Giving billions of rupees to China when the people of the country are suffering is a huge loss to this country.
People in the country are struggling for food. The price of goods has increased. Thus, if this country continues to travel, it will go to the abyss.
The Terrorism Prohibition Act was brought into the country temporarily during that period for an emergency.
I, a Member of Parliament, was arrested for using that law. Similarly, Tamil youths in Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu and Batticaloa have been arrested and imprisoned for one to two years.
They are arrested on the basis that they share ideas on social websites. They have no money so they are struggling without the opportunity to hire lawyers.
As many as 300 Muslim youths are in jail. Forty of them have been prosecuted while the others are being held in jails under the Prevention of Terrorism Act without any prosecution.
The world therefore calls for an immediate change in this law. The garment industry is the largest export economy in the country. They have therefore asked for the law to be changed and made in line with international law, subject to the GSP tax concessions available.
Failure to do so could lead to a major economic crisis in the country. We therefore call for a change in the worst anti-terrorism law to make it more humane.
He also said that I have been invited to an all-party discussion on the 13th Amendment.
