It is a well known fact that this Gnanasara Thera was the main reason why the rich left Sri Lanka
Who is the Gnanasara Thera?
Born in Galle in 1975, he holds a degree in Buddhism from the University of Kelaniya
He founded the Bodu Bala Sena in 2012 with defectors from Buddhist Sinhala extremist organizations such as the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) and is currently its secretary.
He has been punished by the court during his tenure as an organization and as an individual.
Gnanasara was arrested in 2016 for intimidating the wife of missing journalist Prakeeth Eknaliyagoda inside a court complex and sentenced to 6 years suspended imprisonment.
However, in 2019 he was pardoned and released by former President Maithripala Sirisena.
At the same time, he has made various controversial demands regarding the religious rights of Sri Lanka's minorities and has been accused of being behind the Aluthgama and Digana riots.
After Gnanasara's release from prison, there was political turmoil in Sri Lanka.
On that occasion the turmoil in Sri Lankan politics led to a change of regime.
The election had to be held in a democratic way again.
The racist slogans already put forward by the Gnanasara Thera-led BBS were at the forefront of the election campaign.
The policies of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna were similar to the racist policies of Gnanasara
Gotabhaya Rajapakse, who was already the then defense minister in 2012 and 2013, was told whenever he was asked if he was linked to the BBS and that he had nothing to do with it.
But the election did not differ from the activities of the BBS and the policies of the Podujana Peramuna.
Accordingly, the policies of the BBS may have contributed to the resurgence of the Rajapaksas.
However, the BBS was dissatisfied with the new government's forthcoming trade agreements with countries such as the United States and India, marriage laws for Muslims, and counter - terrorism measures. From time to time he came to express his dissatisfaction with the government.
