As more is known, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has documented allegations of retaliation and intimidation against about 240 civil society members, activists and journalists in 45 countries, including Sri Lanka.
A report documenting the incidents was presented to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. Presented yesterday by Ails Brands Kehris, Assistant General Secretary for Human Rights.
In a statement to the Human Rights Council on February 9 last on Sri Lanka, the Human Rights Commissioner said there were serious surveillance and harassment of civil society organisations, human rights defenders and victims.
At the same time, the High Commissioner expressed concern that this situation creates a cold effect on the civic and democratic space and leads to self-censorship.
The Human Rights Commissioner therefore urged the authorities to immediately end all forms of surveillance, including intimidation by government agents and harassment against human rights defenders.
