In the three years from 2019 to 2021, more than 13.13 lakh girls and women have gone missing in India. Most of them are from Madhya Pradesh, followed by West Bengal.
According to Union Home Ministry data tabled in Parliament last week, 10,61,648 girls above the age of 18 and 2,51,430 below the age of 18 went missing across the country from 2019 to 2021. This data is compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
It has been reported in Parliament that 1,60,180 women and 38,234 girls have gone missing in Madhya Pradesh from 2019 to 2021.
During the same period, 1,56,905 women and 36,606 girls went missing from West Bengal. In Maharashtra, 1,78,400 women and 13,033 girls went missing during this period. In Odisha, 70,222 women and 16,649 girls went missing in three years.
Among Union Territories, Delhi has the highest number of missing girls and women. There, 61,054 women and 22,919 girls went missing between 2019 and 2021, while 8,617 women and 1,148 girls went missing in Jammu and Kashmir.
The government also informed the Parliament that it has taken many initiatives for the protection of women across the country. The Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013 was enacted to effectively prevent against sexual offences.
Also, the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2018 was enacted to prescribe more severe punishments, including death penalty, for raping girls below 12 years of age. The law mandates that the investigation of rape cases should be completed within 2 months before the charge sheet is filed and the trial should be completed within another two months.
Meanwhile, the government has launched an emergency response support system. It provides a single internationally recognized number (112) based system for all emergencies. And computer-aided dispatch of field resources to the scene of distress.
Using technology to enable smart policing and security management, the first phase of Safe City projects has been sanctioned in eight cities namely Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow and Mumbai
